For those who wish to remain full members of both Squash & Tennis, the proce will remain the same :-)

With summer coming, and the price reduction coming in on 1st April 2017, now is a really great time to think about joining the club

Billy Whalley – a squash star in the making?

Billy Whalley – a squash star in the making?

Billy picked up his first squash racket when he was 8 years old and immediately took to the game like a fish to water. With very little in the way of formal coaching he quickly started to show some serious talent and put his marker down as one for the adult population of NAS&TC squash club to be looking over their shoulders for!

Having won the C and B grade county graded tournaments in fairly short order he is now competing with the much larger and stronger teenagers in the A grade as well as regularly travelling around the country competing individually in county closed and England squash tournaments as well as representing Devon at u11s and u13s. He entered his first ranking tournament in June 2015 with a ranking of 125, 1 year on he is a regular winner of the u11 England Squash bronze junior events, recent runner up in the Summerfield (Bronze event) u13 event and has a national ranking of 15.

It may be unsurprising to hear that Billy has firmly set his sights on breaking into the top 10 (mainly to get sponsorship and free rackets!) and becoming a trusted member of the England junior squash team. There is no doubt that he will have to work hard to achieve this and his step up to U13s from November will bring fresh challenges, but the desire is certainly there!

In his short but impressive squash life to date he has accomplished an awful lot, some of his achievements are listed below

  • June 2015 – England Squash Bronze event - Summerfield Open u11s Runner Up

  • August 2015 - England Squash Bronze event - Cornwall Open u11s Runner Up

  • September 2015 - Devon County event - County Closed Winner also securing Devon u11s no.1 spot

  • October 2015 - Played no.1 for Devon u13s in first round England Squash inter counties win against Cornwall and Dorset (Ioan Sharpe & Toby Roberts were other NA juniors that also played their part here).

  • November 2015 - England Squash Bronze event - Bath Junior Open u11s Winner

  • February 2016 – Devon County event - D&E B grade winner and A grade RU

  • April 2016 - Playing No.1 for Devon u11s - team finished 4th @ u11s England Squash Inter counties out of 32 counties (Ioan Sharpe & Ed Whalley were other NA juniors that also played their part here).

  • April 2016 England Squash Bronze event - Sutton Coldfield Junior Open u11s Winner

  • April 2016 Newton Abbot Club Handicap Winner

  • May 2016 England Squash Bronze event - Worcester Junior Open u11s Winner

  • June 2016 England Squash Gold event - placed 13th @ u11s National Championships (losing to the eventual winner in the last 16)

  • June 2016 England Squash Bronze event - Summerfield Junior Open u13s Runner Up

  • June 2016 England Squash Bronze event - Vevo Bristol u13s 3rd place

Basil Comyns

Newton Abbot Squash & Tennis club paid tribute to one of its longest serving members and most loyal servants this week following the passing of Basil Comyns aged 82.

In the past 25 years, he had held many posts within the club, including club secretary, fixtures secretary, and was the club’s serving Vice President as well as being an honorary life member.
As well as this, he was a serving Trustee on the board of Newton Abbot Recreational Trust and had been for a number of years.

Basil had also Men’s Captain before handing over the reins in 2012 but still managed to play in a couple of Exeter & District League fixtures that summer.
The tennis club owes a huge debt of gratitude to Basil for all his tireless work including almost single-handedly wading through the mounds of forms to obtain lottery funding to install floodlights at the Marsh Road Club.

As a long standing member of GNATS, Gentlemen of Newton Abbot Tennis Society, which meets and plays twice a week throughout the year, Basil was still taking to the courts in May this year until he became too ill to do so.
Prior to his tennis achievements, he was successful in hockey where he represented Devon, and also played cricket for South Devon and Ashburton Cricket Clubs as an opening batsman and spin bowler, once taking 6 wickets for no runs for South Devon. How they could do with him now!

Basil’s life was celebrated amongst family and friends at a packed Bishopsteignton Parish Church followed by several hours of reminiscences at the Rec’, a club where he had been a popular and familiar figure for so many years.

It would not be going too far to say that without Basil Comyns’ unstinting efforts the Tennis Club would not exist as we know it today.
He was a true gentleman and a friend to many and will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
